The Capital Area Humane Society (CAHS) is the lead agency in Franklin County investigating cases of animal cruelty, neglect and abandonment. The Cruelty Investigations Department provides services to the citizens of Franklin County under Ohio Revised Code 1717.06. Our commissioned humane agents enforce all local and state laws pertaining to the care and treatment of animals as reported by members of the public and partner agencies. Outfitted in bullet proof vests, our humane agents are in the community seven days a week investigating complaints and educating the public. Our work to protect animals also protects other members of the family from the dangerous potential of escalating violence. All proceeds of the Defend Your Friend 5K directly support the work of the Cruelty Investigations Department.

Started in 2007, the goal of the Defend Your Friend 5K is to raise much needed funds to support the Cruelty Investigations Department at the Capital Area Humane Society. Participation in the 5K and funds raised grew steadily over the first four years, with proceeds going toward the purchase of equipment and other items of need.

To celebrate this past success and recognize the importance of this event to the Cruelty Investigations Department, in 2011 CAHS established the Defend Your Friend Fund with the more than $15,000 that was raised that year. All money raised from the 5K will now support the fund, which provides a pool of resources for agents to draw upon when supporting a member of the public in successfully keeping a beloved animal. Examples of items/services provided through the fund include: fencing panels as an alternative to chaining or tethering a dog; Frontline to prevent or alleviate flea/tick infestation; gratis spay or neuter including transportation to and from CAHS; veterinary care for open wounds or other one-time medical needs; and gratis participation in CAHS dog or puppy training classes. In addition, the fund helps cover extraordinary and unanticipated Cruelty Investigations Department expenses, as identified by the Chief Humane Agent, the Chief Operating Officer and the Executive Director.
