His first bout with the indiscriminate foe was in December 2007, when he was diagnosed with Hemangiopericytoma in his brain. Standing tall, he underwent brain surgery in Charleston followed by 30 rounds of radiation, after which he remained unstoppable for 3 years. In February of 2011, he was dealt a series of ruthless blows, as the cancer not only attacked his brain, but struck his liver as well, advancing his disease to stage IV cancer. He fearlessly underwent another brain surgery followed immediately by a Gamma Knife treatment. Both procedures came with complications that diverted attention from the liver cancer which grew aggressively in the meantime. Once he was stable enough for the doctors in his corner to start attacking the liver cancer, they discovered that it was now dominating so much of his liver that the odds were grim. They were disheartened, but Mike, a relentless fighter, never lost hope. Miraculously, he found a new doctor in Savannah ready to take on the challenge of removing the liver cancer – even if it possibly put Mike down for the count! Beating the odds, most of the cancer was removed through the surgery and the rest was removed through a liver ablation process back in Charleston. In his latest challenge, the brain cancer re-appeared with a vengeance. Two tumors grew into nine in only a month’s time. Mike had Gamma Knife again in June 2012 and has another one scheduled in the coming weeks. His medical bills are massive, but not as big as his courage and will to fight. Here’s hoping we can raise funds to knock his medical bills down to size and continue cancer research at the facility where he’s received such incredible care!
